Children of Perbing Khop rarely go to school

As I was going through Sikkim Express, I went across the following news,

"Perbing Khop, a secluded village in South Sikkim has few children completing their basic education. In this Sherpa dominated village, girls give up their education as their parents get them married, while boys are sent off to monasteries to take up a life of a monk. These instances, people believe may have come up due to poverty or limited awareness on the right to education."

Here below is what came to my mind:

In the present era where we see hundreds of unemployed youths in our society resting with degrees in their hand, everyone is aware that getting a job is just as hard as anything. Even when posts come up by chance, we all know who gets job and how. This is not just the case of Perbing Khop. Many parents still think that going to school is all just waste of time and money. Some parents frankly say 'parayera k garnu? kaam pauney hoina ta yo jamanama! boru eta-uta garyo bhaney ek-dui paisa ta kamauncha......' (why to make them educated? There is no chance of getting jobs in this era! Rather if he works here and there, he will earn some money...)

They have this mindset that even if you have completed 10th or 12th grade of schooling, you should be working in some govt office, no matter if peon. People need to be made aware that education is not just about getting jobs. It is about learning the way of living life. Educated people are expected to have different vision and attitude (we all know up to what extent it is correct nowadays as the idiom holds 'shastra parney manchey batu haguwa').

With all this things, it may be very hard to make people understand this facts but today or tomorrow people should be made aware of this. As long as this mentality isn't improved, we can never expect 100% literacy rate. And the other most important thing on the part pf the Government is that recruitment of candidates should be done fairly and the so called theli-fication or chepi-fication should not happen. This may boost the hope and enthusiasm in the students, otherwise they will simply be heard saying as always, 'backing ma manchey hunuparcha hou job ko lagi ta......'

It is true that today if you have to get a govt. job then you either should be on the ruling government's party or you should have good relationship with panchayats and MLA's. Otherwise you will also end up as an unemployed or work in some private sector no matter what degree you have.
