Ragging: A disease to the education system.

Wikipedia defines Ragging as means the doing of any act which causes, or is likely to cause any physical, psychological or physiological harm, apprehension, shame or embarrassment to a student, and includes:

1. Teasing or abusing or playing practical joke on, or causing hurt to any student. or
2. Asking any student to do any act, or perform any thing, which he/she would not, in the ordinary course, be willing to do or perform.

It is unfortunate that this word has been taken lightly for many years. This is like a disease to our education system.
Ragging is a violation of Human Rights.

As per the UGC Regulations, 2009, ‘Ragging’ constitutes one or more of any of the following acts:

* Any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student;
* Indulging in rowdy or indisciplined activities by any student or students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student;

* Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student;

* Any act by a senior student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher;

* Exploiting the services of a fresher or any other student for completing the academic tasks assigned to an individual or a group of students;

* Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student by students;

* Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health of a person;

* Any act or abuse by spoken words, e-mails, post, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student;

* Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.

So the question comes, is education system in any means responsible for motivating ragging? And sadly, the question is yes!! The huge bulky syllabus and the way of teaching has surely played a major role in making students perform this types of act. Seniors take ragging as a way of getting relief from the academic tensions. They believe that one day of enjoyment with juniors will refresh up their mind.

On the other hand some say ragging is a way of getting acquainted with each other in the form of introduction. Though many colleges doesn't even allow seniors to take intro of juniors but to some extent a simple introduction is acceptable as we also need to know each other. But sometime this introduction program takes the form of ragging where the seniors starts humiliating juniors to a great extent. We have hundreds of cases of ragging where the juniors commit suicide as they cannot bear the pressure. These are the cases where the inhumanity crosses the limit and they commit suicide, there are thousands of cases where students complain about ragging and how many of cases goes unnoticed? Just think!!

DONT RAG AND DONT BE A MUTE WITNESS TO RAGGING.......
