An allegedly inebriated drunk driver today crushed to death the life of a promising 17 year old girl but humanity was the real victim when the three bloodied victims of the accident were brought to its door for first line of medical treatment.
Four Class IX students of Sumin-Lingzey secondary school, who were going to Singtam bazaar for tutions after school, who were going to Singtam bazaar for tutions after school hours, had been hit from behind by a speeding truck (WB 78-0279) at around 4:30 pm along the NH 31A.
Kalpana Darnal(17) was crushed to death at the spot while Sharmila Sunar(16), Sita Limboo(17) and Doma Sherpa(18) sustained grievous injuries. The injures students were immediately evacuated to the nearby Singtam District Hospital by the local residents and police thinking that
emergency medical response there could prevent further deaths.
This unfortunate tragedy went grotesque at the hospital where one doctor and two nurses were insufficient to handle the three victims.Locals and family members who had rushed the three bleeding students were stunned, frustrated and utterly dejected to find out that the ambulance drivers were missing and nowhere to be found when the victims were referred to Gangtok.
Finally after 30 minutes of frantic search, one driver was located and Sharmila Sunar was rushed to Central Referral hospital. Local residents are also upset with the hospital management that no nurse could accompany the patient to Gangtok.
Later, when the condition of the other two victims started deteriorating and were referred to Gangtok, no second ambulance driver was to be found. The anxious family members decided not to search for the driver and took their injured children on a taxi to Gangtok.
A large gathering of local residents including distinguished individuals who had gathered at the hospital witnessed this mockery of medical response and callous attitude of the hospital management for such state of affairs of a District hospital.
Deceased Kalpana Darnal and injured Sharmila Sunar are from Sangkhola while Doma Sherpa is from Burung. The condition of Sharmila Sunar is said to be critical.
Meanwhile, the accused truck driver driver and his helper have been arrested by Singtam police. It is informed that the truck was returning after unloading cement at Marchak near Ranipool when the incident happened. The truck driver Durga Chettri and his son Bhuwan Chettri had tried to flee from the spot but the police apprehended them and the truck before they could cross Singtam. Both of them are said to be drunk.
