Dec 21/2010: A day long awareness programme on drug abuse, alcoholism and HIV/AIDS was conducted yesterday at St. Francis School. Jorethng in South Sikkim. The programme was organized by Trinity Non Government Organization, South Sikkim under the banner of Anusuchit Jati Kalyan Sangha (AJKS), South Sikkim.
President, JNP, PD Agrawal, Registrar EIILM University, Col Alok Bhandari, Sub Jailer District Prison Namchi, Parasmani Pradhan, Councilors JNP Ganesh Adhikari and Prakash Lakhandira and Trinity members among others were present on the event. Over 50 students from school in and around Jorethang were enlightened on the drug abuse, alcoholism and HIV/AIDS.
The main resource person of the programme was Rachana Rizal, Council, ICTC, Namchi District Hospital where she gave awareness on HIV/AIDS. She informed that more than 193 cases found positive HIV till 2009, out of them 16 positive cases are from South District. She further informed that positive cases of HIV/AIDS will cross thousand if we test thoroughly each individual in Sikkim. She further informed that HIV in Sikkim has spread highly from physical transmission and in between age group of 20-39 yrs.
Project Director, Lokesh Chettri talked on drug abuse and alcoholism and shared his life experiences of being drug addicted. The programme was addresses by president PD Agrawal and Brien Chandra Rai, a social worker from Jorethang.
