December 10: A total of 1360 students from 680 primary school from Sikkim who have secured first and second position in class V exams in their respective schools will be competing for 100 available seats under the Chief Minister's special merit scholarship scheme.
The scheme is a ticket to the underprivileged Sikkimese Students studying in government primary schools for better and expensive higher education in reputed schools in and outside Sikkim with full expense borne by the State Government. It was launched last year as one of the fourth term of the Sikkim Democratic Front and fifty students were selected.
Top 10 students in the entrance exam conducted by the state HRD department are presently studying at SciIndia School at Gwalior and Pine Grove in Himachal Pradesh. The top 3 students are from remote schools of Dzongmu, Lachung and Lingmoo. Rest forty students are studying at TNA, Donbosco School, Namchi Public School and St. Xavier School.
This time the intake capacity for the scheme has been enhanced to 100 students as announced by Chief Minister Dr. Pawan Kr. Chamling in his Independence Day address.
The screening exams will be held in each District headquarters on December 15. The first and second rank students of class V exams from all the 680 primary schools will be eligible to participate in the exams.
