Sikkimese child selected for National Bravery Award 2010

December 10: 11 year old Bivek Sharma will be receiving the National Bravery Award 2010 from Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during the Republic Day celebrations next year. The brave lad is the first child from Sikkim to receive the prestigious award and will be participating in the Republic Day parade with other national brave awardees.

Bivek was selected for the National Bravery Award by a committee of Indian Council for Child Welfare in recognition of his heroic act while saving a 7 years old girl here at Development Area.

On June 15 earlier this year, Bivek who was going to a shop in the area had spotted Sai Priya hanging from a window 17ft above the ground. The girl was suffering from autism. Without giving a second thought, Bivek managed to save the child from sustaining major injuries though he himself fell in the cemented stairs below the building. Priya who was unconcious was rushed to the STNM hospital while Bivek pushed towards his home.

"We got an official letter on December 9 informing that our child has been selected for the National Bravery Award. we are extremely happy", said Mr. Bhakti Prasad Sharma, Bivek's father.

Mother Bhumika thanked the District Collector, Additional District Collector of East Sikkim, Child Welfare Board of Sikkim and media for the award.

"I am glad that I could make the name of Sikkim in the national level", said Bivek. He is a student of Prashanti Vidya Mandir and is a Sai devotee. He aims to become a scientist.
