Where have all the blossoms gone?

Sikkim is known for its orchids and rhododendrons but it is also home to the Himalayan cherry trees. Every year, between autumn and winter, the Cherry trees bloom in a riot of pink; presenting a sight of eternal beauty. It is as though, the trees work all year round for this annual grand show, to bid a colourful farewell to bid a colorful farewell to the passing year and welcome the new. To the residents, the season evokes feelings of nostalgia - of the wonders of childhoos, the years of growing up and a sense of gratitude for the present.

But the colours seem to be fading today; there seems to be a decline in the cherry tree population around Gangtok. The road to the Secreteriat and places around TNA at one time came alive with colours of the blossoms during the season, now the blossoms are a rarity. Not very long time ago, one could even see the blossoms dotted way beyond on the hills of Ranka, now they are no longer there. In our pursuit of 'development' we have unwittingly depreciated our natural treasures; the beautiful cherry trees are no exception.

Time has come for us to revive our cherry trees and bring them back to the glory they deserve, so that we continue to enjoy its blossoms for generations to come. To start with, we could organize plantation drives for the native Himalayan cherry trees all over Sikkim - in all pockets of gardens around our towns, along our road sides, private gardens and forest reserves. Owing to varying patterns across the regions of Sikkim, an extensive plantation drive could ensure extended period of blossom in the state.

Cherry blossom season can be promoted to enhance tourism, much like the recently held Rhododendron festival and the famed orchid show of Gangtok. Such a promotion of Sikkim's cherry blossoms could be a potential attraction for winter tourism in Sikkim.

Anyone who wishes to join the cause, share knowledge, make suggestions could join the FB community page 'Sikkim Cherry Blossoms'.

Many of us grew believing that catching a falling cherry petal would help us pass our exams, It is my fervent hope that we will pass this exam as well and help our cherry trees 'bloom and grow forever'.
