Villagers repair bridge on their own.

After the concerned department furned a deaf ear to their pending demand, villagers of Basilakha and Supthang under Pakyong sub-divison collectively repaired the fragile wooden bridge over Ranikhola, Namcheybong in East District on their own efforts.

The villagers donated construction materials like bamboo, wood, nails and other items and repaired the bridge into working condition. The wood in the aerlier bridge had decayed punching out holes making the task of crossing it a risk proposition for the villagers.

Students and villagers who have to cross the bridge everyday were at great risk and this was the only lifeline of the village, the locals said. We made several request to the department but nothing materialized, they added.

The villagers claimed that repair work had been sanctioned under Zilla fund by the Gangtok Block Development Office but nothing happened and hence, we decided to maintain the bridge and undertake repaier works twice a year, they said.

'This is an appreciable effort by the villagers by not waiting for the government to take some action. If this type of mentality is developed by every citizen of Sikkim then it wouldn't be difficult for Sikkim to develop in a exponential rate.'
