Sports competition for the “special” children

Two days’ district level sports competition for physically, mentally and visually challenged and deaf & dumb children kicked off Monday [11-Oct-2010] here at Bhaichung Stadium. The event was organized by Special Olympic Bharat, Sikkim Chapter and was sponsored by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

Total 96 physically challenged children and adults participated in this sports meet. They were from Spastics Society of Sikkim, Gangtok, Special School Sichey, Gangtok, Student of Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial School for Handicapped Namchi, and the physically challenged people from different villages of South District.

The participants competed in disciplines like athletics, badminton, bocce and football. Zilla Adakshya South, Rai Chandra Gurung was chief guest of the day, while Chairman, Namchi Municipal Council, Buddha Tamang was special guest of the inaugural function.

Mr. Gurung, chief guest, appreciated the initiative taken to organize the event for the special children. The programme was also addressed by Chairman (SOB) Manita Pradhan and Panchayat President Raj Kumari Thapa and attended by Vice Chaiman NMC, NH Ansari and councilors NMC, Assistant Director and Programme Coordinator NK Chettri, and Chairman Tea Board, Gagan Rai among others.
