UK professors visit Sikkim University

Sikkim University welcomed its two distinguished guests from the universities of UK. Pro Chancellor of Sheffeild Hallam University, Professor Miachel Smith and International Dean, South and Central Asia of Glasgow University, Professor Vivienne Baumfield is on their two day visit to Sikkim University.

Purpose of this visit is to find the areas of cooperation between the Sikkim University and the two respective Universities. They would be going through the presentations made by different departments of the University.

Both the guests were welcomed by Dr. Mahendra P. Lama, Vice Chancellor Sikkim University. Dr. Lama on his welcome note said “Sikkim University is located at strategically important location. We are in a state which share boundaries with China, Bhutan and Nepal and is very close to Bangladesh. Our endeavour is to bring global knowledge in this university and do some policy research on serious issues which are of national and international importance”.

On his note Dr. Lama also mentioned that Sikkim University has a very important role to revive the intellectual and cultural heritage of this region. He also added “we started without scratch and as VC I am proud to say that we all did quite well”.

Sikkim University is getting recognized because of its some non conventional programmes. Currently University is running schools in Folk and indigenous study, Sustainable Development and Livelihood Management, Peace, Conflict and Human Security Studies under its non conventional category.

The visiting of Professors from Glasgow and Sheffied Hallam is also an opportunity to find the areas of collaborations between Sikkim University and these two Universities in terms of research, teaching and exchange programme.

Professor Vivienne Baumfield in its address to students said “I am hoping to understand more about your University and the areas where Glasgow and Sikkim University can work together”. Glasgow is one of the Oldest Universities in the world and fostered the talents of seven Nobel laureates, one Prime Minister and Scotland’s inaugural First Minister.

“I am very much pleased to say that I can find various matches between Sikkim and Glasgow University where we can work together” added Prof. Baumfield.

Prof Miachel Smith, who is also a renowned scientist, with extensive knowledge and expertise in medical science and technology gave presentation on Sheffield Hallam University. He briefed about history, students and culture of University and said “We and Sikkim University can work together in getting local and international knowledge. I can see synchronizations in teaching and Research”.

In his short presentation he made audience laugh at many occasions and mentioned the “first ever football club started was in Sheffield and so what people from Manchester say is not true”.

Various departments of Sikkim University also made their presentations and briefed about the achievements to the distinguished guests. These presentations will continue on 18th also. The programme was held at Sikkim University Library and was attend by students and faculty members.
